Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information the Science Book Club app (“the app”) collects, why, who can see it, and the choices you have. The app is run by the Science Book Club (“the club”, “we”).
What we collect
When you create an account and use the app, we store:
Your account details: your name (the display name you choose), your email address, and your password. Passwords are stored scrambled (hashed), so no one, including the club, can read them.
Your profile photo, if you choose to add one.
Your membership: whether your account is waiting for approval, approved or removed, which club groups you belong to, and the date you joined.
Your reading progress on the club’s books, if you record it.
Your settings, such as whether you want event reminder emails.
Event reminders on your phone, and the events you tick “Remind me” for, are stored only on your phone, not by the club.
We do not collect your location, contacts or browsing activity, we do not use advertising or tracking tools, and we never sell your information.
How we use it
To create your account, sign you in, and let you reset your password.
To let the club approve new members and organize members into groups.
To show you the events, books and pages meant for you, and to save your reading progress.
To send emails about your account and the club: sign-up and password-reset codes, a welcome email when you’re approved, and reminders the day before events (which you can switch off).
Who can see your information
Other members cannot see your details. Your name, email, photo, groups and reading progress are not shown to other members.
The club’s administrators can see members’ names, email addresses, groups, membership status, profile photos and reading progress, so they can run the club.
Service providers who run parts of the app for us, and only for that purpose (see below).
Services we use
Supabase stores the app’s accounts, content and photos, and runs its automatic emails. See Supabase’s privacy policy.
Resend delivers the app’s emails. See Resend’s privacy policy.
Apple and Google deliver the app through their app stores, under their own privacy policies.
These companies may store information on servers outside your country, including in the United States.
Links to other sites
The app links to other services, such as Patreon, our newsletter (Mailchimp), Facebook, YouTube and Zoom. When you open those links, that service’s own privacy policy applies.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while you have an account. If you delete your account, your account details, profile photo and reading progress are deleted straight away. If an administrator removes you from the club, your account is kept so you can be restored later, unless you ask us to delete it.
Your choices and rights
Change your details: update your display name, password and photo on your Profile page.
Stop reminder emails: switch off Email reminders on your Profile page.
Delete your account: use “Delete my account” on your Profile page.
Ask us for a copy of your information, to correct it, or to delete it, by emailing us (below).
Depending on where you live, you may have further rights under data protection laws, such as the GDPR in the UK and EU or state laws in the US. Contact us and we’ll help.
Security
Your information is sent over encrypted connections, and the club’s database only lets each member reach their own information. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
Children
The app is for people aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, please contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top of this page, and tell members in the app or by email if the changes are significant.
